Q series buildings, also known as Quonset huts, are some of the strongest structures in architecture because of their rounded corrugated arch design. These huts, named for Quonset, Rhode Island, the location of the naval base where the hut design was developed, were used extensively during World War II to house troops and equipment in the field. Some returning soldiers liked them so much that they purchased the surplus huts to use as housing after the war. Now, Q series buildings are put to use as airplane hangars and to house grain; their resistance to the worst of Mother Nature make them ideal for storage purposes. Farmers also love industrial steel buildings.
